Networking is such an important part of any business — but especially as photographers. So much of getting work comes from referrals and word of mouth. I don’t think I fully understood how powerful networking was until I actually started attending events.
A while back, I went to a networking event in Greensboro, NC that was specifically for creatives. It was honestly so refreshing to be in a room full of like-minded people. There were photographers, models, a DJ, a graphic designer — people all working within the same creative space.
We talked about everything from camera gear to the type of work we’ve done. But it wasn’t all “professional” talk. We also chatted about shared interests, hobbies, and everyday life. It felt natural and genuine, not forced. During that event, someone even told me about a wedding show where I could meet wedding photographers and potentially network further.
Taking the Next Step
A couple of months later, I attended the wedding show that had been mentioned to me — also in Greensboro. Before going, I made a list in my phone of all the photography vendors who would be there. I made it a goal to find them, introduce myself, and let them know I was trying to break into wedding photography. I offered to second shoot and just get my foot in the door.
I won’t lie — I did receive some rejections. A few photographers told me they weren’t hiring. But it wasn’t all bad news. Some of the responses mentioned adding me to their second shooter list, which was incredibly encouraging.
Now we wait and see what wedding season brings. But regardless of the outcome, putting myself out there felt like a huge step forward — and I’m genuinely excited about what could come from it.
Where to Start Networking
If you’re looking to network with other photographers or models, Facebook is a great place to start. That’s actually how I found the first networking event I attended. Searching for local creative groups or industry events can open a lot of doors.
Industry shows, styled shoots, and vendor events are also fantastic opportunities. You never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities might come from a simple introduction.
Instagram is another amazing networking tool. I’m part of a group called whatsitsface, where we exchange advice and share our work. It’s really awesome to have a space where you can chat, learn, and grow alongside other creatives.
Final Thoughts
Networking can feel intimidating at first, but it truly makes a difference. It’s not just about handing out business cards — it’s about building real connections. Whether it leads to second shooting opportunities, referrals, collaborations, or simply friendships, putting yourself in the room matters.
You never know what doors might open just because you showed up.
